BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Floral fireworks: An Doan Nguyen moved from Vietnam to Europe to study Fine Arts and Art History at Wimbledon College of Art. The Scandinavian surrounding became not only home but also the source of inspiration and place of origin of his dreamlike, photo-realistic paintings with a touch of surrealism reminiscent of masterpieces by Gerhard Richter. The aesthetic of both photography and painting coalescence behind a veil of drips of color: The viewer seems to look through a misted window or a lens covered in raindrops. Enveloped by the scent of the Asian flora, the viewer is let in on the mysteries of the exotic world of plants. The meditative and scenic touch generates the impression of fragments of an exceptional landscape, memory or even a feeling. The dazzling richness of detail bears resemblance to the realistic still lifes from the Golden Age of the Netherlands in the 17th century: Light and shadow are artfully used as a narrative, the dramatic contrast of color seems to be in the spirit of works of Rembrandt and other Baroque icons such as Caravaggio and Velasquez.
The influences of Vietnam’s manifold nature together with the absorbed impressions of Bergen, the rainiest city of Europe, flow together in profoundly overwhelming works of art.
An Doan Nguyen’s pieces are full of life – which is not meant to be fossilized by being put into a box: They range between impressionism and expressionism, precise photorealism is infused with surreal details. Bold and vivid brushstrokes merge the different elements, culminating in an aesthetic explosion of colors.
