BACKGROUND INFORMATION
As if strung on a necklace, picturesque, little houses form brightly coloured patterns mildly reminiscent of naïve art. These houses, however, actually exist on Brighton Beach in Melbourne. British photographer Michael Warrilow captures these historic beach huts in his artfully composed panoramas.
These Victorian bathing boxes first appeared in the middle of the 19th century and have since become one of the Australian city’s unmistakable landmarks. In fact, they are now protected by law, meaning their architectural features can no longer be altered.
Warrilow’s panoramas offer an idealised representation of the huts, without perspective distortion. This special aesthetic is achieved by stitching multiple individual shots together. Captured in the warm afternoon sun, the brightly coloured images inspire a strong urge to travel.VITA
